Blog Kiosk: 6/7/2019 - Dodgers Links - Some Odds and Ends

Check out this fantastic Barney Stein photo of a young and dapper Vin Scully at Ebbets Field in Brooklyn. It is unfortunately undated (eBay Auction Link).

Below are more links to check out:
  • This Day in Dodgers Baseball: In 1898 Brooklyn owner Charles Ebbets stepped in to be the teams manager for the remainder of the season. The team would not fare well. The Dodgers would have a record of 38-68 under Ebbets and finish in 10th place overall with a 54-91 record. In 1982 Steve Garvey played in his 1,000th consecutive game. He would receive a standing ovation from fans at Dodger Stadium. In 1995 Tommy Lasorda won his 1,500th game as a major league manager when his Dodgers defeated the Expos, 7-1.

  • Per Jay Jaffe at FanGraphs -- "Corey Seager is Finally Heating Up."
  • ICYMI: Austin Barnes was activated from the IL. Rookie catcher Will Smith was sent back down to Triple-A Oklahoma City.
  • Per Brian Witt at Yahoo Sports -- "Why Farhan Zaidi says there's 'strategic advantage' to Giants-Dodgers trade."
"There is an interesting point here," Zaidi said on KNBR's "Tolbert & Lund" show Thursday. "If we do end up in a position where we're selling and looking to get some future talent, you actually want to be trading in the division because you want to weaken your rivals in future years, and you want them to push more chips into the present. In a way, it actually benefits you more."
  • Per Ken Gurnick at MLB.com -- "Dodgers pleased with 'unique' Draft haul: L.A. takes majority college players, 20 pitchers over 3 days."
“We feel great about the outcome,” said scouting director Billy Gasparino. “We feel even better about the amount of quality players we got this year. We really got some unique college players.”
...
“We thought the left-handed college pitching group on Day 3 was a really strong group and we ended up taking five of them,” Gasparino said. “That was the demographic we thought was the strongest, so it was a huge score for us.”
“I think it’s a lot more growing up in terms of maturing as a person instead of a baseball player,” Bledge said. “You know you learn things here, along the way at St. Johns and summer ball. So, you learn thing from other people, players you’re around, coaches obviously, but I think the biggest thing for me was growing up as a person rather than a baseball player.”
“While I was going through rehab, it was the worst thing ever,” he said. “Mentally I was a whole different person. When you can’t throw a baseball when I’m going through rehab and my arm doesn’t feel as strong as it does, it kind of takes a toll on you. There were times I thought I would never pitch again and I was thinking about calling it quits.
...
“I’ve been a Dodgers fan my entire life,” Gamboa said. “How crazy is that? As soon as I got drafted, cars were pulling up to my house and Dodgers jerseys everywhere. It’s crazy right now. It feels like a dream.”
  • Via the Commonwealth Times -- "‘A dream come true’: a major league drive yields Orioles, Dodgers selections for Rams."
(Zac) Ching spent the day anxiously scrolling on Twitter, hoping to see his name during the second day of the draft.
“I was really nervous, especially being a senior, there’s no guarantee about anything that can happen in the first 10 rounds,” Ching said. “I was sitting there refreshing Twitter over and over every five seconds hoping to see my name get called.”
