Blog Kiosk: 7/17/2019 - Dodgers Links - Some Odds and Ends

That was a tough loss -- especially since we scratched and clawed to not only stay in the game, but to also eventually overtake the lead going into the ninth. Unfortunately, Jansen's woes continue. Per Rowan Kavner at Dodger Insider:
“Every game stings to lose, especially the way it started,” manager Dave Roberts told SportsNet LA’s Alanna Rizzo. “And for Walker to hold serve and keep us in the game and turn in a quality outing actually. … and the bullpen up until that last inning was very good, and offensively we did some things to keep clawing along, keep getting the game closer, to ultimately the Matt Beaty homer off their closer was a huge hit. So there’s a lot of good takeaways, but ultimately we didn’t win a game.”

  • This Day in Dodgers HistoryIn 1954 the Dodgers field the very first starting nine that consist of a majority of black ballplayers for the first time in Major League history. In 1974 Dodger starter Tommy John suffers an arm injury on the mound against the Expos that would eventually lead to a revolutionary new surgery that would be widely known as "Tommy John Surgery" -- to repair a torn ligament in the elbow by replacing it with a ligament taken from another part of the body. The surgery is performed by Dr. Frank Jobe. In 1976 Walter Alson wins his 2,000th game as a manager. His Dodgers defeat the Cubs in Los Angeles, 5-4. Alston would then leave the Dodgers at the end of this season -- finishing with a 2,040-1,613 lifetime mark as skipper.
  • Happy BirthdayEddie Brown!
  • Another Dodger promotion. Per Ron Cervenka at Think Blue LA -- "Quakes Josiah Gray promoted to Double-A Tulsa." He came to LA from Cincinnati - as a part of the Yasiel Puig trade.
  • Ugh! Per a tweet from Pedro Moura:

"I just told them, ‘It hurts, but I’m good. Let’s go,'" Jansen said. "That’s what I like about Doc, man. Listen, you’re going to lose ballgames sometimes. I’m not a quitter. Even if it hurts, I’m still going to go out there and compete, but I should have been a little smarter out there, and be honest with myself and come out of the game. I just take the blame on myself."
While Jansen wanted a mulligan, Roberts stuck by his decision.
"When Kenley is a guy who’s been around many times, and he feels like he can keep going -- and feel like he’s not compromising himself for the team -- then for me, I’ve got to trust that," Roberts said.
Guggenheim Partners won the dismissal of a lawsuit claiming it defrauded investors in a risky annuity, and siphoned cash for purposes including to help its billionaire chief executive Mark Walter buy the Los Angeles Dodgers baseball team.
...
Guggenheim countered in court papers that Ogles fell “far short of pleading with the required specificity that the Guggenheim defendants engaged in mail or wire fraud” necessary to support a racketeering claim. It also suggested that Ogles’ only alleged injury came because he believed his annuity did not perform as well as he expected.
After back-to-back hitless games, Smith had the game of his life on Tuesday for Triple-A Oklahoma. The backstop smacked two home runs and drove in a career-high seven RBIs. The Dodgers’ No. 5 prospect has driven in 11 RBIs over his last four games.
  • BTW, the National Sports Collectors Convention (NSCC) in Chicago is a couple of weeks away, and news is just beginning to arrive about the various redemptions and giveaways from the hobby. So far, Topps has announced a wrapper redemption program that includes ballplayers on the 2019 Bowman design (including the Sandy Koufax card on the right).
  • Fun stuff here. Via Nick Diunte at Forbes -- "Mike Oz (of Yahoo Sports fame) Explains How He Got His Own 2019 Topps Allen And Ginter Baseball Card."
“One of my best friends, Ben Aguirre Jr. … he was actually the one a long time ago who said, ‘Man, I wonder if you do this long enough, will you get an Allen and Ginter card?’” Oz said during a recent phone interview. “I didn’t even know what that was. I was pretty disconnected from the modern world of baseball cards.”
“I just showed up [Friday] and said, ‘Hey, I want to try this,’” Braun said. “What actually put the thought in my head is I saw a demo they were doing on MLB Network about Cody Bellinger and his bat, and where he was starting the angle of his bat in his stance in ’17 when he was really good, in ’18 when he was not quite as good, and this year when he’s been incredible. They were showing how his bat was flatter.
“I was like, ‘Why don’t I try that?’ I put my hands there and it felt really good. It gets me in a better position, sooner, for the position I’m trying to get to. Obviously, it’s a lot different [from his traditional stance], but it felt really good. I get through the zone quicker and easier. We’ll see what happens.”
