- This Day in Dodgers History: In 1939 the Dodgers receive shortstop Pee Wee Reese from the Red Sox in exchange for $35,000, three minor leaguers and a player to be named later. It is later discovered that a poor scouting report filled out by then Boston shortstop Joe Cronin had purposefully downplayed Reese's abilities for fear of losing his job with the team. In 1949 Jackie Robinson testified in front of the House Committee on Un-American Activities to express his disagreement with actor Paul Robeson's assertion that African-Americans would not fight a war against Russia due to America's history of racial animus. In 1957 Gil Hodges hit his 12th career grand slam to tie a National League record held by both Rogers Hornsby and Ralph Kiner.

A few years ago, Gibson reportedly apologized to Oakland Athletics pitcher Dennis Eckersley for the way Gibson celebrated the hit, former Red Sox announcer Don Orsillo told Chad Finn of the Boston Globe.Gibson “is unloading . . . to people he wants to apologize to,” recalls Orsillo, “and he apologizes to Eck for showing him up running around the bases. He says, ‘I never got the chance to tell you, I wasn’t showing you up, I was just reacting emotionally.’ Eck says, ‘You’ve got to be kidding me. I never thought of that once. You know how many people I pointed at after I struck them out? I would have been dancing going around the bases!’”
Eckersley handled it well, telling Gibson he would have celebrated too.

But when you give certainty that you're not compromising yourself for the team, then I'm going to trust it. So to then go back and say, 'I should've come out of the game,' it's a little bit tough to swallow."
