I've been reading for weeks about how Clayton Kershaw is on a steep decline. Fortunately, Kershaw doesn't care what the prognosticators say. He's on a mission -- a journey to prove that he's still got it. And I think last nights effort is a clear indication that he's on the right road. Clayton struck out the first seven batters he faced. Per Christina De Nicola at MLB.com:
"That first time through, he was rolling pretty good," Marlins manager Don Mattingly said. "Actually, all the way through. He had eight out of first nine [strikeouts]. Clayton Kershaw struck out the first seven batters he faced in a 9-1 win over the Marlins. That stretch marks the longest streak by a Dodgers pitcher in Modern Era (1900). Kershaw matched a season best with 10 strikeouts over seven scoreless innings of two-hit ball. Hos perfect game was broken up by Harold Ramirez with a two-out single in the fifth. The veteran lefty tied Sandy Koufax for fifth on the Franchise's all-time wins list with 165.
To top things off Dodger rookie Edwin Rios blasted his first two career homers in the Majors, and he had the fortune to do it in his hometown of Miami. Per Christina De Nicola at MLB.com:
"It was awesome, just hearing the fans when I was on deck yelling 'FIU (Florida International University),'" said Rios, the Dodgers' No. 19 prospect, per MLB Pipeline. After a breakout season in the Minors, Edwin Rios became the first Dodgers player since Cody Bellinger to hit the fist two home runs of his career in the same game. Rios took Jordan Yamomoto deep in the fourth inning to extend the team's lead to 4-0 and later added a two-run shot to right field in the sixth inning.
