It was LA Kings Night at Dodger Stadium yesterday, so I thought I'd put up this pic of Tommy Lasorda with Kings winger Tyler Toffoli.
BTW, the Dodgers defeated the Cardinals last night (3-1), so maybe this is an omen for the upcoming Kings season -- or, maybe not.

- This Day in Dodgers History: In 1915 rookie Dodger pitcher Ed Appleton committed a grievous error due to a bit of trickery by Cardinals player/manager Miller Huggins. In the seventh inning of a tied game Huggins, while coaching at third base, called for the ball from Appleton -- 'Let me see that ball'. Appleton obliged and tossed the ball, only to see Huggins step aside to allow the ball to roll on the field. A Cardinal runner then scored a go-ahead run. The Dodgers protested, but time out hadn't been called, so the run counted. In 2003 Eric Gagne tied the single season record for consecutive saves to start the season at 38. It also marked the 46th consecutive regular-season save overall.
- Happy Birthday, Adonis Terry, Tom Drake, Rocky Bridges, José Domínguez& Jose De Leon!
- ICYMI: The Dodgers recalled Caleb Furgeson and Edwin Ríos. Alex Verdugo was placed on the 10-day injured list with a right oblique strain and Tony Gonsolin was optioned to Triple-A Oklahoma City.

- To the surprise of no one. Via a PCL story at MiLB.com -- "(Gavin) Lux Named PCL Player of the Month For July."
For the month, Lux led the league in batting average (.435), on-base percentage (.519), and OPS (1.356) while also tying for the league lead in runs scored (29) and triples (4). The Kenosha, Wis. native also finished among the top of the league's leaders for the month in many other categories including: hits (42, t2nd), total bases (77, 4th), and RBI (26, t6th).

“We’re trying to keep it in perspective, because it’s baseball,” said Smith’s’ father, Mark. “There will be bad days. There are for everybody. But it’s been great. Unbelievable. ”“I’m happy for him and very proud, because I know how hard he’s worked for this,” added Smith’s mother, Julie.
- Via Kenny Kelly at Beyond the Boxscore -- "Dodgers pitcher Tony Gonsolin is opening eyes."
If his fastball hasn’t met it’s potential yet, we’ve seen what his other pitches can do. The split-finger grades out as his best secondary offering, and it’s what he uses most often. It was his most effective tool for carving up the Cardinals lineup as he got 10 swings and misses on the 23 splits he threw. Gonsolin’s splitter sat 84-88 mph on Monday night. Of the 31 pitchers who have thrown 50 splitters this season, only four have thrown theirs harder than Gonsolin.
