Blog Kiosk: 9/11/2019 - Dodgers Links - Seven in a Row!

WooHoo! Per Rowan Kavner at Dodger Insider:
“The feeling never gets old,” (Russell) Martin said. “We’ve had a good record for a while, so we kind of felt like this moment would happen at some point. But the thing is, the group that we have, that’s what you think about. You think about the people that we have here. Celebrating this moment with good people is what matters, for me at least.”
Per Eddie Matz at ESPN:
"You got to tip the hat to the front office and the job that they do every year creating so much depth," Justin Turner told Spectrum SportsNet LA after Tuesday's victory. "You look at the guys around this room, I think every single guy had their finger on winning this division for the seventh straight year. So many good players [with] one goal in mind -- that's to win the World Series."

  • This Day in Dodgers History: In 1959 the Dodgers defeated reliever Elroy Face and the Pirates, 5-4; thereby, ending Face's consecutive win streak at 22. He finished the season going 18-1 (as a reliever, mind you) with a 2.70 ERA, 2.60 FIP and a 3.2 WAR. In 1983 RJ Reynolds squeezed home Pedro Guerrero in the ninth for an improbable walk-off victory against the Atlanta Braves. The Dodgers scored four runs in the ninth to win. Tommy Lasorda called his decision to call for the squeeze the most "daring" of his career. Watch video highlights/footage of the ninth inning, hereIn 1998 Kevin Malone is named the Dodgers GM, replacing Tommy Lasorda

  • Fun Fact, per a Dodger press release:
Los Angeles is just the third-ever team to win seven or more consecutive division titles, joining the New York Yankees (9, 1998-2006) and Atlanta Braves (14, 1991-2005). Dave Roberts, the Dodgers’ manager since 2016, becomes the first manager in MLB history to lead his team to division titles in his first four full seasons as a big league manager.
  • The Dodgers have added their first-ever bobblehead for the playoffs. See it on the right. Per a Dodger press release:
In honor of his MVP-caliber season, the Dodgers will give away a Cody Bellinger bobblehead at their first NLDS home game, marking the club’s first-ever Postseason bobblehead. The special edition bobblehead depicts Bellinger in his home run trot and will be available in both his home white uniform and road grays. The first 40,000 fans in attendance will receive either the white or gray version of the bobblehead depending on what is available at their point of entry. The team will also distribute rally towels at each Postseason home game.
  • ICYMI: The Dodgers recalled infielder Edwin Rios yesterday. Per a Dodger press release:
Ríos, 25, returns for his third stint with the club after hitting .286 (10-for-35) with two homers and four RBI in 17 games for the Dodgers. In 104 games with Oklahoma City, he slashed .270/.340/.575 with 31 homers and 91 RBI. In five minor league seasons, he has hit .295 (492-for-1670) with 95 homers and 326 RBI. He became the first Oklahoma City Dodger to club 30 homers in a season and first Triple-A Dodger farmhand since Joc Pederson clubbed 33 homers for the Albuquerque Isotopes in 2014. The Puerto Rican native was originally drafted in the sixth round of the 2015 First Year Player Draft out of Florida International University.
This call-up was all about the recent setback of Alex Verdugo, via a tweet from Pedro Moura:

  • Via RJ Anderson at CBS Sports -- "Why the Dodgers' handling of Kenta Maeda highlights the potential conflicts of interest with contract incentives." I too have wondered about this.
It's fair to suggest that a pitcher moving from the rotation to a nightly relief role could benefit from a transition period. But the Dodgers have asked Maeda to pitch in relief twice so far, and both times he's thrown four innings, including after Urias's most recent start. If the Dodgers are willing to use Maeda as a long reliever in September, why wouldn't they just keep him in the rotation -- other, that is, than to potentially avoid paying him his bonus for reaching 30 starts?
