New York Giants skipper John McGraw decided to take a photo of his counterpart, Dodger manager Wilbert Robinson. Per a description on the reverse (eBay auction link):
John McGraw takes Wilbert Robinson's picture but Robinson and his Brooklyn Baseball team took the first game (boxscore) from the New York Giants on the opening game of the (1926) season at the Polo Grounds, New York. McGraw evidently wanted to see if rotund Robby had gotten any thinner since they last met last fall.Below are more links to check out:
- This Day in Dodgers History: In 1940 a fan instigated a fight on the field with the games home plate umpire. Following a dismal season and a bad call that resulted in another Dodger loss, 21-year old fan Frank Germano jumped on the field and proceeded to sucker-punch a retired heavyweight boxer, umpire George Magerkurth. I wrote about the incident here. In 1957 the LA City Council votes to approve a 300-acre site in Chavez Ravine for a ballpark if the Dodgers will finance a public recreation area. In 1988 Reds starter Tom Browning throws a perfect game against the Dodgers, 0-1 (boxscore).
- Happy Birthday, George McVey, Dick Robertson, Buster Mills, Mike Garman, Orel Hershiser & Paul Shuey!
- BTW, tomorrows game against the Tampa Bay Rays will be broadcast exclusively on YouTube. Both Nomar Garciaparra and Alanna Rizzo will be a part of the broadcast.
- Former Dodger Charlie Culberson took one in the face over the weekend. Per Dylan A. Chase at MLB Trade Rumors -- "Charlie Culberson Fractures Cheek Bone, Out For Season." You can watch it here.
- Per Chad Moriyama at Dodgers Digest -- "Caleb Ferguson has a new grip on his curve & it may lead him to the playoff pen."
At some point around the middle of July, he started working with a new grip on his curveball thanks to Rick Honeycutt, ‘The biggest change is Honeycutt had me change my grip, obviously for the better. We changed the grip and I have more ball to work with. It just gives me more room for error. I don’t have to be so fine with it.“
- Is Jansen back? Per Ron Cervenka at Think Blue LA -- "Jury Still Out on Jansen but Verdict Looking Favorable."
“My cutter is a feel pitch, and when I feel it click, you’ve got to hold on to it,” Jansen told reporters after his outstanding inning of work during which he retired the side on 10 pitches including striking out Mets superstar first baseman Pete Alonso on three pitches. “I’ve been searching the whole year. I finally figured it out. You see the life, the rise, and the cut again. It’s made me become a better pitcher because I’ve used secondary pitches and I’ve got more weapons.“I don’t know how to explain it, it’s just muscle memory when I’m doing things well, and for some reason, it just clicked,” Jansen added. “Now that we’ve clinched, it’s just get ready for the playoffs.”
