Here is another fantastic press photo, originally from the George Michael Collection, featuring a close play at the plate, dated 9/16/1951 (eBay auction link). Per the descriptor on the reverse:
Chicago: Dodger catcher Roy Campanella puts the ball on Ransom Jackson as the Cub infielder tries to score from third on Chuck Connors' fourth inning grounder to first baseman Gil Hodges who fumbled the ball, but Jackie Robinson grabbed it and threw Jackson out. Brooklyn won 6-1.Below are more links to check out:
- This Day in Dodgers History: In 1946 the very first playoff series to determine a league champion is played between the Dodgers and Cardinals. Today is Game 1 of a three game set and is played in St. Louis. Unfortunately, Brooklyn would lose Game 1, 4-2, and lose the series a couple of days later at home, 8-4. In 1974 Dodger reliever Dr. Mike Marshall set a Major League mark when he made his 106th appearance of the season. In 1993 Mike Piazza set a Dodgers new record for RBI's in a season for a rookie when he plated his 107th run during an 8-5 victory over the Astros.
- Happy Birthday, Duster Mails, Jim Russell, Fred Kipp & Roberto Kelly!
- FYI: The first original employement contract between the Dodgers and Vin Scully -- that I wrote about here -- recently closed at auction through SCP for an amazing $76,193.

“I was talking to my wife the other day. I don’t know how I made it this far. Physically. … In a lot of ways,” said Freese reflectively. “It just comes down to selfishly pushing and also the people around me. You put that together and you’ve got a chance.”
- Via Alex Pavlovic at NBC Sports/Yahoo -- "Giants appreciated how Clayton Kershaw handled Madison Bumgarner's moment."
"I just wanted to do something for Madison," Bochy said. "With all he's done, I just said there can't be a better script right now with Clayton on the mound. They've battled so many times, not just pitching against each other, but how they compete against each other with the bat."...
"That's what makes baseball fun, little tidbits like that that you get to see throughout the year," catcher Buster Posey said. "I thought it was really cool how Kershaw pitched him. He went right after him and challenged him. Those two have been going at it for a decade now and there's hopefully more to come, we'll see."
Clayton Kershaw added this, via Bill Plunkett at OC Register/Pasadena Star News:
“I actually made a joke about it before the game — ‘He’s probably going to pinch-hit against me’ — and it happened,” Kershaw said. Both he and Roberts denied that the matchup between the two aces had been pre-arranged.
“It was cool,” Kershaw said. “Once he saw that he wasn’t pitching today, some way to let the fans appreciate what he had done here — that was a good way to do it. Get him in there against a left-hander he has a few homers against. It was a fun moment. He meant so much to this organization. He’s going to keep playing but most likely not here so it was a great way to honor that.”
- Dodger reliever Casey Sadler gets a surprise tweet:
I grew up in a one stop light town. Never did I ever imagine having someone like @BradPaisley wanting to send me an encouraging message. This season has been such a humbling experience for my family and I.
