Blog Kiosk: 10/17/2019 - Dodgers Links - Some Odds and Ends

I am already thinking of Spring Training, so I thought sharing this photo would be apt. Featured is a March 12, 1937 International News press photo (eBay auction link). Per the descriptor on the reverse:
"TIME OUT FOR BREATHER.  Clearwater, Fla...All work and no play does things to a ballplayer as well as other folk, so this trio of Brooklyn Dodgers takes time out from training to sit and chat for a bit.  They are, left to right, Woody English, who came from the Cubs; Harry Lavagetto, a former Pirate 2nd baseman, and Roy Henshaw, former Cub pitcher.".
Below are more links to check out:
  • This Day in Dodgers HistoryIn 1978 the Yankees defeated the Dodgers in Game 6 of the World Series to win their second consecutive title. In 1981 the Dodgers defeated the Montreal Expos in Game 4 of the NLCS at Olympic Stadium, 7-1. Steve Garvey hit a two-run homer in the eighth to break a 1-1 tie, then the Dodgers scored four more runs in the ninth to run away with it. They are tied at two games a piece in the series with a deciding Game 5 two days later.
  • Happy Birthday, Pop DillonMike SandlockJohnny Klippstein & Jim Gilliam!
  • I love these videos. Mike Oz at Yahoo Sports opens up a pack of cards with former Dodger hurler Dave Stewart -- "Dave Stewart remembers the '89 earthquake and calls out a Hall of Famer on 'Old Baseball Cards'" He also has some very kinds words for Fernando Valenzuela. Watch it here.
  • Via Ron Cervenka at Think Blue LA -- "Casey Sadler – Good Things Happen to Good People."
  • Per Cary Osborne at Dodger Insider -- "Hyun-Jin Ryu up for two Players Choice Awards."
Ryu is a nominee for National League Outstanding Pitcher and is up against New York Met Jacob deGrom(2.43 ERA, 0.97 WHIP, 255 strikeouts) and Atlanta Brave Mike Soroka(2.68 ERA, 1.11 WHIP).
He is also a nominee in the NL Comeback Player of the Year, where his competition is Atlanta third baseman Josh Donaldson(37 home runs, .900 OPS) and Cincinnati pitcher Sonny Gray (2.87 ERA, 1.08 WHIP).
"People were surprised by it. But the hockey people I knew understood my passion for it, and most of my buddies in baseball were excited for the opportunity," Colletti said. "You know the thing that I missed the most? The competition. I have enough to do in life. But there's a competitiveness in your DNA. When the opportunity to compete goes away, it's the toughest thing. This gives me the opportunity again to compete."
  • A must read! Per Tom Hoffarth at Angelus News -- "'The one thing that makes it work': An exclusive interview with Vin Scully." Excellent! He chats about his Catholic faith and even mentions the employment contract that recently sold at auction.
Scully: I did get to see a copy of it, and although it looks like something I could have typed 70 years ago — “I agree to do this” and “I agree to do that” — I actually didn’t write it. In those days, they called it a letter of agreement. It was likely something one of the secretaries drew up.
It reads as if I was applying for the job, but I had already met [Hall of Fame booth mate] Red Barber a few weeks prior, and he had sent me to Mr. Rickey, and they drew up this letter. So I really had no personal attachment to it. I think I was on the job at least four years before someone actually drew up a formal contract.
  • What??? Per Justin O'Connor at Forbes -- "MLB Crypto Bobbleheads Have Sold For Thousands Of Dollars." I don't understand this stuff at all.
  • Below is a 2019 Topps Now card that was released following the Dodger Game 5 loss to the Nationals -- I had failed to make note of it on this blog. It features Walker Buehler and it has a print run of 257 copies.
Walker Buehler continued to stake his claim as the team's next great ace, becoming the first pitcher in MLB history to record at least seven strikeouts in each of the first six Postseason starts.Buehler dominated the Washington Nationals, pitching into the seventh inning and striking out seven batters and allowing just four hits and one run.
