Blog Kiosk: 12/19/2019 - Dodgers Links & News - Some Odds and Ends

What the heck?

Check out the above undated (likely 1950's) vintage photograph featuring the Dodgers pitching staff being directed by backstop Roy Campanella (eBay link). What Campy is doing exactly, I do not know. He's got his hands cupped over his ears, like he's expecting a loud sound.

As for the pitchers in the photo, I can clearly see Don Newcombe (third on the left), and according the a notation on the back Ralph Branca is there too. Unfortunately, I can't quite place Branca. I think he might be just to the right of Newcombe. I also think Johnny Podres is the second person to the left of Newcombe.

Below are more links to check out:
“We are on target, but we don’t have a minute to spare,” said Janet Marie Smith, the highly acclaimed senior vice president of planning and development who oversees the entire project.
The centerpiece, literally, is a new center-field plaza that will serve as a “front door” to the complex. Fans will be greeted at the plaza by two statues -- one of Jackie Robinson, relocated from the reserve level, and a new one of Sandy Koufax. A permanent home for “Legends of Dodger Baseball” will also reside there.

  • This is interesting. Via Tim Dierkes at MLB Trade Rumors -- "List Of Current MLBPA Player Representatives." BTW, Justin Turner rep's the Dodger players.

Boras said the markets for both pitchers have been deep, estimating that interest in the pair has been “triple-fold” this year given that neither has Draft-pick compensation attached.
“The pitching market has obviously been fast and furious as it was from the start,” Boras said. “Clubs are identifying their needs, and we’re certainly narrowing the corridor of finality. It could happen soon.”

  • Here's another reason why you should really believe what you hear from a reporter -- Justin Turner never actually said he'd move to first should the Dodger sign Rendon.
“I think it got blown a little out of proportion... I mean, I’m a team guy. I’ll do whatever it takes to win. Like I said, I just want to win a championship. So, at the end of the day it’s not my job to decide who’s coming in here and who’s going to play where. That’s Dave’s job, and it’s Andrew’s job to sign free agents and whatnot. Regardless of how I felt, I wasn’t going to have a choice. If they signed Rendon and Dave wants me to play first, I’m going to go play first. I don’t have a choice.”
...
I actually got approached by a reporter … He came up and asked me about Rendon being a free agent and whether or not I want him to come to LA and I’m like, ‘dude, we’re about to go play against this guy — I don’t have time to talk about this’ and I kind of left at ‘look, I’ve played all over the place my whole career — whatever happens happens and I’ll adjust’ and I think the headline to the story was ‘Justin Turner agrees to move to first base.’
