Now this is the kind of memorabilia I like to see.
Currently, Lelands auction house is running their 2019 Fall Classic auction and there's a bunch of Brooklyn stuff in it. There's vintage porcelain, clothing, jewelry, advertising art and spring training collectibles. The best piece of all, though can be seen above.
Featured at the very top is a game-used Baseball (Auction Link) from Game 1 of the 1916 World Series between the Brooklyn Robins (Dodgers) and the Boston Red Sox -- a team headed by then star pitcher Babe Ruth. Best yet, the ball comes directly from the personal collection of Ruth teammate Dick Hoblitzell. Per the auction description:
The ball features the handwritten inscription: "Oct 7 -16, Brooklyn 5, Boston 6" as well as other writing that is not legible. The ball shows visible use, and the labels cannot be seen anymore. The next item is fantastic (Auction Link). It is basically a bootleg of a vintage plastic squeak toy manufactured by Rempel Manufacturing in the 1940's to 50's. It's of their 'HoJo' figurine that is widely attributed to be the Brooklyn Dodger 'Bum'. I had previously written about the plastic toy here.
The piece on the right appears to be made of porcelain instead of plastic, and I think it's likely to have been made in Japan -- who are known to have made numerous figurines for the American market after WWII. Heck, I'd be willing to bet there use to be a 'Made in Japan' sticker on the bottom of its feet.
According to Lelands this is only the third time they've seen this figurine - it's the first time I've laid eyes on it. So, it is apparently very scarce. It currently has a $225 bid on it.
In 1948 the Brooklyn Dodgers made Vero Beach their permanent Spring Training home. Then in 1953 they completed a new stadium there called Holman Stadium, which is still in use today. Featured above is an original March 11, 1953 souvenir program and mini bat commemorating the Dedication Ceremony of the stadium (Auction Link). It is currently priced at $250.
Lastly, check out the above late-40's Bond Bread advertising poster featuring a young lady, wearing what looks like a Brooklyn Dodger cap, swinging for the fences (Auction Link).
As you may know, Bond Bread produced several popular (and very rare) Baseball card sets for the general public to collect -- including a 13-card Jackie Robinson set. You can see those Robinson cards here.
