- This Day in Dodgers History: In 1953 the Brooklyn Dodgers traded Andy Pafko to the Milwaukee Braves for Roy Hartsfield. In 1976 Dodger great Tommy Davis is released by the KC Royals, ending an 18-year MLB career. - Collectors are apparently speaking on eBay, via a tweet from Darren Rovell:
A significant amount of Altuve items have been dumped onto eBay today. Collectors clearly scared of their liability depending on what happens.— Darren Rovell (@darrenrovell) January 17, 2020
- Via Ben Walker at AP -- "Stolen away: Brooklyn pitcher recalls ’51 sign-stealing scam."
When a buzzer rang in the New York bullpen — conveniently located in play back then, in deep right-center field — a Giants player who might waggle a white towel would signal to the hitter what kind of pitch was coming.“A batter wouldn’t even have to move his head,” Erskine said. “It was right over the pitcher’s left shoulder. Just shift your eyes to about 2 o’clock and you’d see it.”
- Per Alden Gonzalez at ESPN -- "MLB: No evidence Astros used wearable devices to aid sign-stealing."
- Via Jesse Owens at Yahoo Sports -- "Jose Altuve denies that he wore electronic device to tip pitches."
- Per David Paschall at the Chattanooga Times Free Press -- "Former MLB pitcher and coach Rick Honeycutt on Astros cheating scandal: 'There were obviously some things that didn't quite add up'"
"I remember looking at Clayton's game down at Houston, and the big blow was the home run in the fifth inning," Honeycutt said. "I always look at the games the next day to see if we made a bad pitch selection, and they laid off some unbelievable pitches in that game. In those two games, they scored 18 runs and had 26 hits."We still had the chance to clinch it at home in Game 7 and didn't, but there were obviously some things that didn't quite add up when you go back and look at some of those games."
