Blog Kiosk: 1/22/2020 - Dodgers Links & News - Some Odds and Ends

I know I've shared this photo before, but it's so great it's worth another look. This vintage 8/16/1938 ACME press photo is available at RMY Auctions. Per the descriptor on the reverse:
Dodgers' Quartette Eludes the Heat with Song -- New York City -- Despite the broiling sun, this Brooklyn Dodgers' quartette burst into song and fogot about the heat as they relaxed at the Polo Grounds, August 16th, where the Dodgers beat the Giants, 7-3. Left to Right: Tuck Stainback, Buddy Hassett, Kiki Cuyler and Babe Ruth.

  • This Day in Dodgers HistoryIn 1988 seven ballplayers are declared free agents as a result of an Players Association's 1985 collusion lawsuit against the owners. Kirk Gibson is one of those players, and this event would eventually lead to him signing with the Dodgers seven days later. The rest, as they say, is history. In 2007 the Dodgers signed amateur free agent Pedro Báez as a 19-year old third baseman out of the Dominican Republic. He would eventually convert to a relief pitcher in 2013.

  • Politicians are idiots! No self-respecting Dodger fan wants this. Via Alden Gonzalez at ESPN -- Resolution urges MLB to strip Astros, Red Sox of World Series titles, award them to Dodgers."
  • They won't mean it. Via Alyson Footer at MLB.com -- "Crane: Players will apologize in Spring Training."
"A couple of guys that have been interviewed have been holding back a little bit," Crane said. "We need to get them a little more time to get together in Spring Training. Everybody's split up [geographically]. We're going to sit in a room and talk about it and then we're going to come out and address the press -- all of them will address the press either as a group or individually.
"Quite frankly, we'll apologize for what happened, ask forgiveness and move forward."
  • Every couple of years, or so, video footage of Clayton Kershaw's five-inning perfect game as a high schooler pops up. The other day was one of those times. Via a tweet from Ben Porter:
“Whatever happens in the clubhouse stays in the clubhouse, and Fiers broke the rules,” Martinez said. “I agree with cleaning up the game. I agree that the fact that the Commissioner is taking a hard hand on this, but at the same time players should not be the one dropping the whistleblower.
About $30,000 was raised for Advocates for Access, bringing the total raised over the years to more than $100,000. The organization, which is headed by McAllister’s mother, Jeannine, helps people with disabilities live on their own.
“If you’re in a wheelchair and you need a ramp built, they’ll help facilitate in building that ramp,” McAllister said. “It’s kind of an easy go-between to help with may different things to help anybody with any sort of disability live independently.”
  • Former Dodger Willie Calhoun, who was a big piece going to the Rangers in the Yu Darvish trade in 2017, speaks up about the Astros cheating scandal, via a tweet from Joe Trahan:
