Blog Kiosk: 1/28/2020 - Dodgers Links & News - Some Odds and Ends

Here's the upcoming cover of Time magazine that honors Kobe Bryant, via a tweet from Tania Ganguli. Per Rowan Kavner at Dodger Insider:
“I was so fascinated and in awe with him,” (Justin) Turner said. “Growing up, everything that left my hand was followed by a ‘Kobe.’ What he meant to so many people here in Southern California, the icon that he was in the world, really, it’s just sad. It’s a sad day, and it’ll be a sad week, and I don’t know how long it’s going to take for anyone to get over this — if they ever will.”

  • This Day in Dodgers History: This isn't Dodger news, but it's worth noting. In 1949 the NY Giants signed their first African-American ballplayer -- Monte Irvin and hurler Ford SmithIn 1961 the International League Board of Directors votes to move the Montreal Baseball franchise to Syracuse, New York, where the former Dodger farm club will play as the Chiefs. In 1982 the Dodgers signed free agent infield prospect Dave Anderson. He would play eight season in Los Angeles and become a World Champion in 1988 as part of the "Stunt Men". In 2004 the Dodgers signed the great Jose Lima to a one-year free agent contract. He would lead the club with a 13-5 record and become a beloved figure in Los Angeles.  In 2013 the Dodgers announce the launch of SportsNet LA, their own regional sports network on Time Warner Cable.
  • Happy Birthday, Bill DoakLyn LaryJoe BeckwithStu Pederson!
  • I am surprised that Yasiel Puig is still available on the free agent market.
  • From Clayton Kershaw on the cheating scandal, via a tweet from Dodger Insider:

  • Justin Turner made this list. Via Matt Kelly at MLB.com -- "The 5 most surprising infield standouts of 2019."
The Dodgers didn’t land Anthony Rendon, and there’s almost no chance they acquire Nolan Arenado. But they might be just fine with Turner at the hot corner again.
DRS (+7 in 2016 to -7 in ’19) and UZR (+9 in ’16, -7 in ’19) say Turner is declining as a third baseman, but Statcast disagrees: he actually improved from -3 OAA in ’18 to +4 last year. In fact, the 11-point difference between Turner’s UZR and OAA was tied for the fourth-largest of any infielder.
“JT, we talk about his work in the community and the different things he does for the city of LA, just what he means, he’s like the embodiment of a Dodger,” Kershaw said. “He’s just a great teammate. He continues to support us and what we do. We just feel like we need to do it for him, not to mention the causes they’re going to. A lot of great things he’s doing for the city of LA.”
  • In case you care. Per Jeff Todd at MLB Trade Rumors -- "Astros Expected To Hire Dusty Baker." I know I'm suppose to dislike the former Giants manager, but I can't. He's a former Dodgers; therefore, I have a natural affinity to see him do well.
  • This is hilarious. Kudos to the Southlake Police Department.
