Check out this fantastic action photo of Jackie Robinson manning his position at second base (eBay link). Per the descriptor on the reverse:
Chicago Cubs Gene Hermanski lies flat for the slide on a second frame force as Dodgers second sacker Jackie Robinson fires to Gil Hodges at first for a double play, Aug. 25, at Ebbets Field. Bruce Edwards rolled to third sacker Billy Cox who flipped to Robinson for the play. 8/25/51.Unfortunately, the Dodgers would not prevail in this game. They would lose, 5-1. Below are more links to check out:
- This Day in Dodgers History: In 1956 Jackie Robinson is awarded the prestigious Spingarn Medal by the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People for his strong support of civil rights initiatives. Martin Luther King Jr. was given the honor the prior year. In 2011 tragedy struck. In Tucson, AZ US Rep. Gabby Giffords is shot and severely injured in an assassination attempt during a constituent meeting held in a supermarket parking lot. She would survive, but others did not. Christina-Taylor Green, 9-year old daughter of Dodgers scout John Green (also grand daughter of former ballplayer Dallas Green), is killed -- along with five other folks. Please check out this fantastic story from late-2018 by Katrina Bland at AZ Central -- "Christina-Taylor Green (who had mad baseball skills) is still surprising her parents."
- Happy Birthday, Breyvic Valera, Chauncey Fisher, Brian Johnson & Derek Thompson!
- Memorabilia Auctions: If you're looking for something unique to collect, Hunt Auctions has a group of eight game-used bats from members of the 1988 World Series Dodgers -- including Mike Marshall, Pedro Guerrero, Mickey Hatcher, Alfredo Griffin, Franklin Stubbs, Mike Davis, Dave Anderson and Gil Reyes (Auction Link).
- Happy to have you on-board, Jimmy! Via a tweet from him:
So excited and grateful for the opportunity to be a part of the @Dodgers organization. Hope to meet some of y’all later this month. #LA #Dodgers #westcoast pic.twitter.com/IBfoBnjARi— Jimmy Nelson (@Jimmy_J_Nelson) January 8, 2020
- BTW, Jimmy Nelson also remarked that his shoulder is just fine:
Actually have had ZERO issues with my shoulder since before spring training 2019. It’s stronger than ever.— Jimmy Nelson (@Jimmy_J_Nelson) January 8, 2020
- This is fun. Per Dustin Nosler at Dodgers Digest -- "‘Worst’ Dodgers draft picks of the 2010s."
- Via Clint Pasillas at Dodgers Nation -- "Blue Jays Slugger Bo Bichette Praises Clayton Kershaw in Video: “Clayton Kershaw is a legend, man.”
- Via Jeff Todd at MLB Trade Rumors -- "Dodgers To Sign Edubray Ramos" to a minor league deal.
Ramos, 27, is a nice buy-low candidate to roll the dice on. He had been an effective hurler for the Phillies but was non-tendered after an injury-riddled 2019 season in which he was ineffective and showed reduced velocity when he was available to pitch.
- Ken Gurnick at MLB.com recently shared his thoughts on the upcoming 2020 Dodgers roster, and in the process provided a bit of news about Andrew Toles:
There seems to be no expectation for a return by Andrew Toles, who missed the season with personal issues.
- I hadn't realized that Dodger prospect Jared Walker was playing winter ball in Australia. Per 1 News in Auckland -- "Tuatara back to winning ways thanks to Jared Walker's pair of home runs against Geelong."
