After much hand wringing, the trade initially reported last week is in its final stages and it's a bit different than what we were originally told. Sure, it's not exactly the lopsided transaction we heard about, but it's still an extremely good deal for the Dodgers. Not only do we get Betts and Price, but the "live-arm" reliever thought to be going to Boston is actually going to be a Dodger -- Brusdar Graterol. Below is the rundown, via Do-Hyoung Park at MLB.com:
DODGERS-TWINS TRADE
Dodgers get: RHP Brusdar Graterol, OF Luke Raley, 67th pick in 2020 Draft
Twins get: RHP Kenta Maeda, Minor Leaguer, cash
RED SOX-DODGERS TRADEOn another note, the reported trade between the Dodgers and Angels also fell apart. So for now, Joc Pederson and Ross Stripling are still Dodgers. I don't expect that to remain the case. Below are more links to check out:
Red Sox get: OF Alex Verdugo, SS Jeter Downs, C Connor Wong
Dodgers get: OF Mookie Betts, LHP David Price, cash
- This Day in Dodgers History: In 1916 veteran catcher Chief Meyers is waived by the Giants, but is claimed by both Brooklyn and the Boston Braves. They settle who gets him with a coin toss. The Dodgers win and Chief Meyers joins Brooklyn. In 1971 the Dodgers trade for pitcher Al Downing from the Brewers for Andy Kosco, Downing would spend seven years in LA -- going 46-37 with an 3.16 ERA, 3.45 FIP, 25 complete games and 12 shutouts. In 2009 the Dodgers signed free agent knuckleballer Charlie Haeger.
- Happy Birthday, Kit McKenna, Cotton Tierney, Bob Logan, Randy Jackson, Jack Fimple, Hiroki Kuroda, César Izturis, Luis Cruz & Travis d'Arnaud!
- RIP, Roger Kahn. Per AP -- "'The Boys of Summer' author Roger Kahn dies."
- BTW, the Red Sox will be paying half of David Price's salary. It comes out to $16M per season, via a tweet from Ken Rosenthal:
So, Price for $16M per season over the next three years. https://t.co/dVMD1sVF34— Ken Rosenthal (@Ken_Rosenthal) February 9, 2020
- On the Angels trade that dissipated, via a tweet from Ken Rosenthal:
More on #Angels-#Dodgers, from sources: LAA’s Moreno grew impatient, pulled deal. Might have revived, but LAD saw it as unneccesary after other two trades changed. Outside chance gets revisited. Per @billplunkettoc, LAD needs to drop two from 40-man before trades become official.— Ken Rosenthal (@Ken_Rosenthal) February 10, 2020
- Justin Turner was a bit peeved over the weekend, via his tweet:
Here’s a concept. Let trades happen, and then report on them! All these reporters only care about being first. Meanwhile players and their families are emotional wrecks not knowing if they are or aren’t being traded from the only org they’ve known. No one cares who was 1st https://t.co/9GC1DrCiQM— Justin Turner (@redturn2) February 8, 2020
- Via Cheryl Robinson at Forbes -- "Los Angeles Dodgers Foundation CEO Revives Baseball In Underserved Communities."
“What we saw through our study was that at the end of the day, because of the lack of coaches in underserved communities, because of the lack of funds to actually play the game, the lack of fields, there was so many reasons why kids weren't playing,” she continues. “We developed Dodgers RBI as a direct response to those particular challenges. Over the last six years, we can proudly say we've curated a program that gives kids an opportunity to participate in the sport but participate in the sport to gain social and emotional skills that we really believe can be derived from playing sports. The idea is that if we create adequate quality facilities, if we train coaches, if we give you the equipment, the uniforms and everything you need to play, and in addition to that we provide you with education resources, and health resources, we're helping with engagement. We're helping kids develop those key skills like teamwork, and they have an opportunity to thrive.”
