I hate to see Kenta go. He was one of my favorites on the team, and I'm truly saddened that he'll be departing Los Angeles. Hopefully, he'll make his way back into Dodger Blue later on in his career.
As you likely know by now, the Dodgers have finally swung for the fences and made a series of huge trades that includes several moving parts. At first, we thought Maeda would yield a prospect reliever named Brusdar Graterol -- who would go to Boston as a part of a three-team trade involving All-Stars Mookie Betts and David Price. Now we learn that the Red Sox will not be a part of this deal. Instead, the Dodgers will keep Graterol, in a newly structured trade that includes another prospect and cash changing hands between the Dodgers and Minnesota Twins.
Here's the breakdown, via a tweet from Jeff Passan:
Outfielder Luke Raley is the prospect headed to the Los Angeles Dodgers along with Brusdar Graterol and the 67th pick in the trade that sends Kenta Maeda and $10M cash to Minnesota, a source familiar with the deal tells ESPN. Raley hit .302/.362/.516 at Triple-A last season.— Jeff Passan (@JeffPassan) February 10, 2020
Of course, this is all still unconfirmed. Nevertheless, it seems clear that a deal has been struck and it's only a matter of time before it is officially announced by the respective clubs.
BTW, Luke Raley was a former Dodger prospect. He was drafted by the club out of Lake Erie College (Painesville, OH) in the seventh round in 2016. Raley then spent 2 1/2 years in the Dodgers farm before being traded to the Twin in 2018, as part of the Brian Dozier trade.
In honor and celebration of Maeda's time with the Dodgers I made a couple of custom fantasy baseball cards of him, that you can see at the very top of this post. Below are some news stories I thought relevant to this trade.
- Per TC Zencka at MLB Trade Rumors -- "Twins To Acquire Kenta Maeda, Prospect, And Cash From Dodgers."
- Via La Velle E. Neal III at the Star Tribune -- "Twins, Dodgers complete Brusdar Graterol-Kenta Maeda trade."
