Blog Kiosk: 4/16/2020 - Dodgers Links & News - Some Odds and Ends

Durocher was quite the character. Above is a February 28, 1961 UPI press photo of an agitated Leo. (eBay auction link)
Leo's Back!!
Vero Beach, Florida... Durocher angrily aims glove at photographers after being sent to the showers by ump Jim Duncan in practice game at the LA Dodgers spring training camp.

  • This Day in Dodgers History: In 1945 the Boston Red Sox give tryouts to three Negro League ballplayers at Fenway Park -- Sam JethroeJackie Robinson, and Marvin Williams. None are signed by the club. Their loss became our gain. In 1975 newly signed free agent and soon-to-be Hall of fame pitcher Juan Marichal made his last appearance in a game when he started for the Dodgers against the Reds. He would throw 2.1 innings and give up four runs. He would retire soon afterwards. In 1983 former Dodger Steve Garvey appeared in his 1,118th consecutive game to break the National League record. He broke the record as a Padre, but played 1,107 of those games in Dodger Blue.

  • This is a must watch. Joe David interviewed Mookie Betts on YouTube. Watch it below:
“He looked really good.” Smith told SportsNet LA host John Hartung from his home in Kentucky. “The one outing I caught of him, I think it was two innings, he looked phenomenal. He’s got the stuff and the make-up to really help us out this year.”
Throughout this lengthy run of success, the Dodgers have moved through quite a number of different players. They’ve leaned on some huge stars and many role players. One of the steadiest forces has been Pederson’s prodigious output against right-handed pitching. And he has risen to the occasion in the postseason, turning in a cumulative .239/.326/.487 slash with seven long balls in 133 plate appearances.
Monte Irvin served in the United States Army from 1942-1945. He notably served in the Battle of the Bulge and attained the rank of Seargent. When Irvin returned stateside, Dodgers executive Branch Rickey spoke with the outfielder about him possibly pursuing an MLB career.
Monte Irvin told Rickey he didn’t feel he was ready to play in the Major Leagues yet. Had he said yes, however, Irvin’s potential path to the majors was complicated by legal issues. Effa Manley, the Newark Eagles business manager, refused to let Irvin sign with a team unless she received compensation.
  • I just thought I'd pass this along. Tommy Bahama has just released a new signature camp shirt featuring the Dodgers. Check it out on the right. Go here to check it out and order. Other team available include the Red Sox, Cubs, Astros, Yankees, Giants and Cardinals.
  • Per Thomas Harrigan at MLB.com -- "Producer of '42' donates $4.2M to COVID-19 fight."
  • Via Nick Diunte at Forbes.com -- "Queens Artist Sophia Chang Turns Heads With Her Topps Project 2020 Debut." Topps just released her Jackie Robinson card yesterday. See it here.
“Working on the Jackie Robinson card, I'm doing research—learning more about him, learning more about the specific card, and learning more about his position as a player," she said. “I’m just diving mentally into that, and it's very educational for me because I didn't grow up too deeply involved in baseball culture.”
