Blog Kiosk: 4/28/2020 - Dodgers Link & News - Some Odds and Ends

Here is a fantastic International News press photo from Game 4 of the 1955 World Series. It features Sandy Amoros scoring the Dodgers first run of the evening in the third inning. As you know, the Dodgers would win this game, 8-5. Photo available via Mile High Card Co auction.

  • This Day in Dodgers HistoryIn 1900 Brooklyn Superbas outfielder Fielder Jones becomes the first modern day Dodger player to hit a grand slam. It was accomplished at Brooklyn's Washington Park. In 1982 the Dodgers traded Leo Hernandez to Baltimore for professional pinch-hitter Jose MoralesAs a pinch hitter in his career he slashed .276/.324/.424/.747 with 123 hits in 446 at-bats. As a Dodger he batted .270 with 24 hits in 89 at-bats. In 1985 Fernando Valenzuela set a major league record by extending his consecutive scoreless innings streak at the start of the season to 41 frames when he blanks San Diego for eight innings. The Padres would then score off Fernando in the ninth inning when Tony Gwynn hit a game winning homer to defeat the Dodgers, 1-0
  • Happy Birthday, David FreeseMatt BeatyJim Poole!
  • RIP, Jerry Bishop. Per Stephen Battaglio at the Post-Gazette -- "Jerry Bishop, longtime ‘Judge Judy’ announcer and radio host, dies at 84."
Bishop joined KFI in 1969, when it was the top "middle of the road" format station in the Los Angeles market. During his five year stint there, he co-hosted "Sports Phone," a call-in program that preceded the station's broadcasts of the Los Angeles Dodgers games. He later moved to KIIS, where he partnered with Tom Murphy to host the "Tom and Jerry Show" in 1979.
  • I hope you're right. Via Jeff Passan at ESPN -- "Passan's 20 questions: There will be MLB in 2020. It's just a matter of when, where and how."
Over the past two weeks, as states have begun to plan their reopenings, nearly everyone along the decision-making continuum -- league officials, players, union leaders, owners, doctors, politicians, TV power brokers, team executives -- has grown increasingly optimistic that there will be baseball this year.
...
Let's consider the delicate push and pull of a return. Locking in a plan before the country reopens -- before anyone understands the consequences of it, good and bad -- runs a certain level of risk. Because of its calendar, MLB could very easily wait until the end of May to decide on its plan and still be the first sport to return.

Fans were able to hear from Dodger players, broadcasters, and famous fans during the nearly 60 minute meeting. From Joe Davis and Jaime Jarrin to Justin Turner and Will Smith to Ron Cey and Eric Karros to Mario Lopez and Brad Paisley, it was quite the collection of talent to greet fans during the party.
  • The Historic Bakersfield Fox Theater recently unveiled a marquee with a fantastic Dodger theme. Check it out below (pic via u/cabearcat on Reddit). Apparently, the non-profit theater has been trying to raise funds during the lockdown to pay for essential bills by renting out the marquee for 24 hour blocks. They are calling it, "Marquee Inspired" and it'll cost $200 for 24 hours. I believe the Dodgers-related message above is the first sign they have put up. Go here to learn more.
