- This Day in Dodgers History: In 1919 Brooklynites attend the very first major league game played on a Sunday due to a new law passed by the NY Legislature called the "Sunday Baseball Bill." The Brooklyn Dodgers defeated the Boston Braves at Ebbets Field, 6-2. In 1966 Willie Mays hits his 512nd career home run off of Dodgers hurler Claude Osteen at Candlestick Park. The homer breaks the NL All-Time home run mark held by Mel Ott. In 1976 it is declared Rick Monday Day in Illinois. The then Cubs outfielder is presented with the flag he saved from an on-field burning attempt at Dodger Stadium. In 2009 the Dodgers win their 11th straight game to start the season -- breaking a NL record. In 2012 the Dodgers signed free agent outfield Bobby Abreu to a one-year $9 million contract.

- Are you hankering for some Baseball? Korean Baseball (KBO) will be coming to ESPN. The first game will air late-tonight, at 10:00 PM PST/1:00 AM EST. It's an Opening Day game between the Samsung Lions and the NC Dinos. Per a press release:
ESPN today announced it has reached an agreement with Eclat Media Group regarding the KBO League – South Korea’s most popular sports league – to exclusively televise six, live regular-season games per week in the U.S. starting with Opening Day – NC Dinos vs. Samsung Lions – on Tuesday, May 5, at 1 a.m. ET / Monday, May 4, at 10 p.m. PT. One game will air each day, Tuesday through Sunday, generally on ESPN2 and on the ESPN App. The telecasts will air Tuesdays-Fridays at 5:30 a.m. ET, Saturdays at 4 a.m. ET and Sundays at 1 a.m. ET. The Lions vs. Dinos Opening Day telecast will air on ESPN, following SportsCenter with Scott Van Pelt.
- Via Craig Edwards at FanGraphs -- "Clayton Kershaw and the Greatest Decades in History."
Over the last 10 seasons, Clayton Kershaw’s 59.1 WAR is the best in baseball among pitchers, four wins clear of Max Scherzer, who is a win ahead of Justin Verlander. Kershaw was actually slightly better from 2009-2018, with 59.8 WAR, which also led baseball. He’s also first in the 10-year periods beginning in 2008 and 2007 despite not playing in the majors in 2007 and not making his debut until late-May of the 2008 season. Kershaw has ended a season as the 10-year WAR leader four times, and is very likely to do so for a fifth time in 2020, but would need to be a couple wins better than Scherzer over the next two seasons to extend that streak to 2021.
- Gavin Lux made it to the quarterfinals of the MLB The Show Players League championship -- losing to the eventual league champion Blake Snell of the Rays. Per Mandy Bell, Adam Berry, Do-Hyoung Park and Juan Toribio at MLB.com:
“Snell is probably the best player in the league,” Lux said. “He’s just better. He’s better with [hitting], and I’m just not there. He’s better.”

“I never really thought I was the best player on the field, or anything of that nature probably until I got older, until maybe my Junior or Senior year [of high school] where I started having, you know, a little more confidence and I started to get better. But when I was younger, I don’t think I was ever the best player on the field.”
- Awesome! Per Jimmy Parker at Uni-Watch -- "Another Beauty! The Art and Artistry of Karl Hubenthal." He was LA's version of Willard Mullin. I had previously featured his artwork here.
Throughout the 1960s and ‘70s Hubenthal contributed cover designs for a variety of Dodger publications – among them Gameday Programs, Yearbooks, Scorecards and Media Guides. Perhaps most notable of Hubenthal’s Dodgers work is this classic program for the 1965 World Series between the Dodgers and the Minnesota Twins. Evoking the space race of that era, Hubenthal depicts the two teams manning spacecraft orbiting a smiling planet Earth. Virtually everything about this cover — the whimsical illustration, the typography, the colors and the “Out of This World Series” play on words — contributes to its visual strength as a whole. Today, over 50 years later, the design is still heralded as one of the best Program covers in World Series history.
