2020 Topps Project 2020 -- Sandy Koufax by Tyson Beck -- #99

Tyson Beck is an Australian graphic design artist who has taken the art and sports world by storm. He originally came on the scene as a young teen creating designs in various basketball forums. By 18 he was working for the Lakers designing wallpapers. Soon his career exploded. Companies and brands like Nike, Adidas, Under Armour, NBA, MLB, NHL, NFL, MLS and UFC came calling. More importantly, Kobe Bryant reached out to provide encouragement and inspiration. Via Ciaran Varley at BBC Sports:
"Kobe was the biggest influence on my career from start to finish," he says. "He was the first design I ever did when I opened up a computer."
...
"It was just a photo line, so everyone was pushing through," he says. "He started chatting to me and the security guard came over to pull me away. He stopped them. It was only a couple of minutes, but he kept asking me so many questions.
"He was like: 'Dude, I'm running an agency now, I've seen your work, it's amazing - how are you working with every brand in the world?'"
Tyson Beck's newest collaboration is with Topps and featured above is his creation -- a Sandy Koufax card for the Project 2020 program. See it at the very top.

As you can see, he takes many of the elements of the original rookie card -- using the portraits and other symbols -- jumbled it all up together into a cogent piece of art reflective of his signature style. I love that he includes the Brooklyn Bridge in the background, but am unsure why barbwire is strewn all over the card. Any help in interpreting that would be fantastic.

Go here to check it out and order the card from Topps online. A complete checklist of all the cards in the set can be found here. The reverse of the card is on the right. BTW, Beck has been selling artist signed versions of his Topps cards on his website -- ordering copies for himself from Topps, signing them and selling them for a premium. As you know, every person who orders has a chance of getting a gold bordered, 1 of 1, version of the card. Tyson recently shared a photo on twitter that showed him getting his own gold bordered 1 of 1 card of Ken Griffey Jr. See it below:

Below is a current Sandy Koufax checklist of Topps Project 2020 cards with their corresponding artist and print runs. This is the sixth Koufax card creation to be released so far:
