Blog Kiosk: 6/15/2020 - Dodgers Links & News - Some Odds and Ends

Here's a fun International Press Photo featuring Jackie Robinson, Joe Black, Duke Snider, Don Zimmer, Walter Alston and Gil Hodges. In the background is a blackboard with the words, "The Bums Dood It 10 Straight." (eBay auction link)

Unfortunately, it is undated and the paper descriptor on the reverse has been torn off. Nevertheless, I am certain the eBay seller is correct in saying it's from the 1955 season. That year they had two - ten game winning streaks before winning their first World Series Championship.

Below are more links to check out:
In a statement Saturday night, MLBPA executive director Tony Clark rejected MLB's latest proposal and said: "Further dialogue with the league would be futile. It's time to get back to work. Tell us when and where."
...
"Given your continued insistence on hundreds of millions of dollars of additional pay reductions, we assume these negotiations are at an end," Meyer said in the letter. "If it is your intention to unilaterally impose a season, we again request that you inform us and our members of how many games you intend to play and when and where players should report."
The 1919 Chicago riot was only part of a wave of racial disturbances that swept the nation during the war years and immediately after, culminating in the horrific Tulsa massacre of 1921 (dramatized in HBO's Watchmen), where vigilantes dropped explosives from biplanes and the black section of town was almost completely destroyed, leaving 10,000 people homeless. The “Chicago war” was not the only such incident to affect black professional baseball: the East St. Louis disturbances in 1917, when between 100 and 150 black people were killed by rioting white workers, seems to have driven Charlie Mills’s St. Louis Giants out of business for two years, as white owners of ballparks apparently refused to accommodate them.

  • Apparently, the Dodgers have just signed their first undrafted free agent and his name is Robbie Peto, via his twitter:

Including selections made during the Draft, Peto becomes the fifth pitcher the Dodgers have added to the organization within the past week. “We’re fired up. We just got a lot of velocity, a lot of pure stuff. It’s big, it’s right handed,” Dodgers vice president of amateur scouting Billy Gasparino said of the haul of pitchers.
“It was a strength of the Draft, and we just took advantage of it.”
